Mobile Crane Safety Operation2/16/2018 The most common failures in cranes are the human errors and machine errors. 90% of failure occur due to human error where the operator was not able to see and calculate the clearance of objects that will be hit by the crane parts and workers and supervisors are not aware of the safety precautions in the work area. Another human failure is when the maintenance crew are not able to properly check the condition of the machines and work area for safety. The failures that occur due to human error can be avoided by following safety guidelines. Watch Your Clearance The work area must be cleared in order to avoid accidents that can cause great damage and injuries in the work area which will lead to additional expense to the company. There must be proper clearance from the m/c, boom or load. This will let the operator work more efficiently and safely. The operator’s vision should not be obscured in order to move the materials freely and have a safe work area. He must also use the blow horn to signal or warn the personnel that the crane is in operation and they will be able to move out of the way. The personnel must also understand the signals for them to be aware of the dangers in working in a construction site. Daily Inspection of Machine A poorly maintained and defective mobile crane must not be operated to avoid machine failure that leads to property damage and severe injuries to people. The maintenance crew must inspect clutch, brakes, attachments and wire rope daily to ensure smooth operation of the cranes and avoid time delays in repairing the cranes on-site. The lattice boom must always be checked to prevent accidents that can cause life of the crew and surrounding people. It must always be accounted that “parts are cheaper than people”. Don’t Let the Load Hit the Boom In carrying humongous and heavy loads, the operator must be aware of the size of the load. He must be careful not to let the load hit the boom because if it happens, the whole structure being built, personnel, surrounding people, and crane might get caught in the rumble if everything fails. Do not let the boom rest on or hit against any object. If a lattice or diagonal bracing member is broken or cracked, replace the part immediately. The most reliable and commonly used spares are Hitachi crane parts, P&H crane parts, and Tadano crane parts where their quality is unsurpassed. If some parts of the boom are bent, straighten it, but it is better to replace it for a more reliable strength. Working Near Power Lines Everyone in the working area must be alert when working near power lines because the surrounding structure and condition can cause death to many if not managed properly. Keep all mobile crane parts, hook block and load, fall lines at least 15 feet from power lines. Assume that all lines are hot and carry large electric voltages. Appoint a person with loud signal to warn the operator if there is a power line in the way. Do not allow anyone to lean or touch the mobile crane. Do not allow the sling man or load handlers to hold load or rigging gears unless necessary. If the mobile crane is operating in an arc zone, keep moving away from the line until the arc breaks at least 15 feet away.
